GATA

Welcome!

Welcome to GATA.org.uk, the online face of the Guildford Amateur Theatre Association. We hope you find this website useful.

GATA is an umbrella organisation with about 20 societies and groups including theatre and opera companies, singing and youth groups, as well as dancers and film makers. GATA works towards advancing public education in the dramatic arts in and around Guildford. GATA has been a big ally to The Electric Theatre and was instrumental in its founding. Many of the groups perform at The Electric Theatre year in year out - why not drop in and see what they are up to, and maybe join in too? Look out for auditions and, if you don't want to tread the boards, there are other ways to get involved too!

"Four legs good...... two legs bad"

Although George Orwell wrote ‘Animal Farm’ as a protest against Stalin’s Communist Russia, the story still resonates today. The question is, how many of today’s dictators started as yesterday’s freedom fighters? Orwell’s Napoleon fits right in!

The Pranksters Theatre Company promises to drag ‘Animal Farm’ kicking and squealing into the
21st Century with innovative interpretation and the first ensemble cast to perform Guy Masterson’s one-man adaptation of the script.

Jeff Thomson Reviews "Hobson's Choice"

It was a full house when I joined the audience for "Hobson’s Choice" by Harold Brighouse at the Electric Theatre, Guildford - the Guildburys' latest production.

Harold Brighouse, a member of the Manchester School of Playwrights, wrote and produced some seventy plays, mostly set in Lancashire and frequently with gritty, realistic, themes. "Hobson’s Choice" is arguably his most well known.

This is not surprising. It is a strong play that has survived numerous interpretations and pivots around Maggie, ‘thirty years old and a bit on the ripe side for marriage’ and her domineering father, Henry. Theatre critic and commentator Michael Billington has described this Brighouse play as ‘built like an iron girder’ probably because star billing can offer the storyline different tonality and emphasis without a hint of detriment.
